About Us

Why classical training drives us to deliver beautiful kitchens

As a newly married couple, Christina and I trained as furniture designer/makers at Rycotewood College in Thame in the early 1990’s. We dreamed of a life designing and making beautiful and innovative furniture. The course focussed on traditional methods and hand tools, with an emphasis on the designs and ethos of the Art and Crafts movement of the late 19th century.

Our first workshop was in an old milking parlour. We spent a happy week spray blasting dried cow poo off the floor, making workbenches, and moving our tools in. We went on to experiment with making totem poles, one-off furniture commissions, and small batch products.

As we gained experience in designing and making furniture, we honed our design principles and our craft ethos. We were drawn to clean lines, symmetry, and furniture that combines beauty and functionality.

We were inspired by John Ruskin and William Morris in this respect:

We require from buildings two kinds of goodness: first, the doing their practical duty well: then that they be graceful and pleasing in doing it.

Creating Simple Kitchens

Inspired to design

With this in mind, we established Simple Kitchens in 1999 with the aim of bringing our love of design and eye for detail to the world of kitchens. Our aim was to offer excellent design, made to measure cabinets, and a complete service to our customers at an affordable price point.

Since then, Simple Kitchens has gone from strength to strength, providing customers with quality kitchens and furniture, and a friendly, professional service.

 

Twenty years on

In 2018, we opened our kitchen showroom in Thame. Christina is our design expert, interpreting clients’ needs and desires to create beautiful kitchens. Thomas manages our team of tradespeople to make sure each job is carried out as planned. Together with our friendly band of skilled workers, we bring excellent design, quality kitchens and a single point of contact service to a wider audience than ever before.

We have never lost our love of design – or of rising to meet the challenge of designing kitchens and furniture with the perfect balance of form and function that will be the heart of your home for years to come.

Thanks to Simple Kitchens, we have helped many hundreds of people turn an aspiration for a dream kitchen into a reality.
